Because I am looking to collaborate with people to develop more tools for organizational improvement, especially with supervisors. There are lots of other blogs on the Supervisor Hellscape reality on this webpage.

The “Square Wheels” metaphor is for use in organizational development and offers several key ideas and themes:

  1. Inefficiency of Current Processes:

    • The metaphor illustrates how organizations often operate with outdated or inefficient systems, much like a vehicle with square wheels that cannot roll smoothly. This encourages a critical examination of current practices.
  2. Innovation and Improvement:

    • It emphasizes the need for innovative thinking to overcome obstacles. Just as round wheels are needed for effective movement, organizations must seek new solutions to enhance performance.
  3. Employee Engagement:

    • The metaphor highlights the importance of employee involvement in identifying problems and creating solutions. Engaging team members fosters a sense of ownership and collective problem-solving — strategies for engagement and enablement.
  4. Change Management:

    • Transitioning from square to round wheels symbolizes the process of change. It reminds leaders that while change can be challenging, it is essential for progress and efficiency. The cognitive dissonance it generates is a wonderful way to motivate a culture to improve.
  5. Visualization of Problems:

    • The Square Wheels One and other images serve as powerful and unique visual tools to help understand and communicate organizational challenges. It simplifies complex issues, making them easier to address.
  6. Collaboration

    :

    • The basic ideas in all the images, such as the wagon train shared below, stresses the value of collaboration across departments and levels. Solutions to organizational problems often require input from diverse perspectives.

Overall, the “Square Wheels” metaphor encourages organizations to reflect on their current practices, identify potential issues, engage employees, innovate, and embrace change to improve overall effectiveness.

Using the image allows you to discuss (and often resolve) any number of any number of issues.
